Direct Laryngoscopy – Detailed Examination of the Voice Box

Direct laryngoscopy is a procedure used to closely examine the larynx (voice box) and surrounding structures. It provides a clear, magnified view to diagnose abnormalities such as vocal cord lesions, tumours, infections, or inflammation that are not easily visible with routine examination.

When is it needed?

Direct laryngoscopy is recommended if you have:

  • Persistent hoarseness or voice changes

  • Throat pain or difficulty swallowing

  • Suspicion of vocal cord nodules, polyps, or tumours

  • Airway obstruction or breathing difficulties

  • Need for biopsy or removal of lesions

The procedure

Performed under general anaesthesia, a rigid laryngoscope is gently inserted through the mouth to visualise the larynx. This allows for detailed inspection, biopsy, or surgical treatment of lesions if necessary. The procedure is usually done in a hospital or an outpatient surgical centre.

Benefits

  • Accurate diagnosis of laryngeal conditions

  • Ability to perform biopsies or minor surgeries during the same procedure

  • Helps guide further treatment decisions

Recovery

Patients typically recover quickly, with mild throat soreness lasting a few days. Normal activities can usually be resumed within a few days, depending on any additional treatment performed.
