A perforated eardrum is a hole or tear in the thin membrane that separates the ear canal from the middle ear. It can affect hearing and increase the risk of ear infections.

Common Symptoms:

  • Sudden or gradual hearing loss

  • Ear discharge (clear or infected)

  • Ringing in the ear (tinnitus)

  • Occasional pain or discomfort

  • A feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear

Causes:

  • Ear infections

  • Trauma (e.g. cotton buds, sharp objects)

  • Sudden pressure changes (e.g. flying, diving)

  • Loud noise or blast injuries

Treatment:
Small perforations often heal naturally within weeks. If it doesn't heal, or if you're experiencing repeat infections or hearing loss, a simple surgical repair (myringoplasty) may be recommended. This can improve hearing and reduce infection risk.

I offer full assessment, hearing tests, and expert advice on whether treatment or surgery is needed.
