Thyroid Surgery – Patient Information
Thyroid surgery is performed to remove part or all of the thyroid gland, which is located in the front of the neck and plays a vital role in regulating the body’s metabolism. Surgery may be recommended for a variety of reasons, including a large goitre (enlarged thyroid), suspicious or cancerous nodules, or an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) that has not responded to other treatments.

As a specialist ENT and head & neck surgeon, I aim to ensure you feel fully informed and supported throughout your treatment. During your consultation, we will discuss your symptoms, scan results, and the best surgical approach for your condition — whether that involves removing one lobe of the thyroid (lobectomy) or the whole gland (total thyroidectomy).

What to Expect:

  • Procedure: Performed under general anaesthetic through a small incision in the neck.

  • Recovery: Usually 1 night in hospital and back to normal activities within 1–2 weeks.

  • Risks: Low, but may include voice changes, bleeding, or calcium level issues. These will be fully explained in your consultation.

  • Aftercare: You may need follow-up tests or medication, especially if the whole gland is removed.

I’m here to guide you through each step and ensure you feel informed and supported at all times. For more information or to book a consultation, please get in touch
