Laryngectomy – Surgical Removal of the Voice Box

Laryngectomy is a major surgical procedure involving the removal of the larynx (voice box), typically performed for advanced laryngeal cancer. This surgery affects breathing, speaking, and swallowing, and requires expert care and rehabilitation.

When is it needed?

Laryngectomy is usually recommended when:

  • Cancer of the larynx is advanced and not treatable by less invasive methods

  • Previous treatments have failed to control the disease

The procedure

Performed under general anaesthesia, the entire larynx is surgically removed through an incision in the neck. A permanent opening (stoma) is created in the windpipe (trachea) to allow breathing.

Benefits

  • Removal of cancerous or severely damaged tissue

  • Potentially life-saving treatment

  • Opportunity for voice rehabilitation through devices or surgery

Recovery

Hospital stay usually lasts several days to weeks. Patients work closely with speech and language therapists to learn new ways of speaking and managing breathing.
