Submandibular Gland Excision – Safe Removal of Diseased Salivary Gland

Submandibular gland excision is a surgical procedure to remove one of the paired salivary glands located beneath the lower jaw. It is most commonly performed for persistent infections, stones (sialolithiasis), or benign and malignant tumours.

When is it needed?
Your ENT surgeon may recommend removal if you have:

  • A persistent lump or swelling under the jaw

  • Salivary gland stones causing repeated pain or swelling

  • Recurrent infections despite other treatments

  • Benign or malignant tumours confirmed on imaging or biopsy

The procedure
The operation is performed under general anaesthesia through an incision just below the jawline, carefully placed for minimal scarring. Mr Adeel removes the entire gland while protecting nearby nerves that control tongue movement and feeling in the lower lip.

Benefits

  • Permanent relief from swelling and discomfort

  • Removal of tumours or diseased tissue

  • Prevention of recurrent infections or blockages

Recovery
Most patients go home the same day or after one night in the hospital. Recovery usually takes 1–2 weeks, with temporary numbness or stiffness possible but typically improving over time.
