Thyroglossal Cyst Excision – Safe and Effective Removal

Thyroglossal cyst excision is a surgical procedure to remove a thyroglossal duct cyst, a small fluid-filled sac that develops in the midline of the neck. These cysts form during early development when the thyroid gland moves into position and may persist into childhood or adulthood.

When is it needed?
Your ENT surgeon, Mr Adeel may recommend removal if you have:

  • A visible lump in the middle of the neck, especially one that moves when swallowing or sticking out the tongue

  • Recurrent infections or swelling of the lump

  • Discomfort or cosmetic concerns

  • Rare suspicion of cancer within the cyst

The procedure
The operation, called a Sistrunk procedure, is performed under general anaesthesia. It involves removing the cyst along with a small portion of the hyoid bone to reduce the risk of recurrence. The incision is carefully placed for minimal scarring.

Benefits

  • Prevents repeated infections

  • Reduces risk of recurrence

  • Improves the appearance of the neck

Recovery
Most patients go home the same day or after an overnight stay, resuming normal activities in 1–2 weeks.
